FIFAワールドカップ・ブラジル大会は7月14日、決勝戦を迎え、延長戦の末、ドイツがアルゼンチンを1−0で下し、1990年のイタリア大会以来、24年ぶり4回目の優勝を果たした。ドイツは途中交代で入ったゲッツェが決勝ゴールを決めた。
前半はおおかたの予想通り、ボールを持ってパス回し、クロスと多彩な攻撃をしかけるドイツに対して、固く守ってメッシ、ラベッシらのドリブルで打開するアルゼンチンという構図で試合が進む。シュートまで持ち込めないドイツに対し、アルゼンチンは少ないチャンスを決定機に結びつけるが、両チームともに先制点を奪えない。
後半、アルゼンチンはラベッシを下げてアグエロを投入して攻めに出ると開始直後にメッシが抜け出して一対一になるシーンがあるが、枠を外してしまう。互いに疲れが見える中、ボールを持つドイツ、逆襲のアルゼンチンの構図は変わらず、後半も無得点のまま終了。
延長後半8分、ドイツは左サイドをドリブルでシュールレが崩して上げたクロスをゲッツェがボレーシュート、ついにドイツが先制する。このままゲームは終了し、ドイツが勝利した。アルゼンチンは固く守ってメッシに預ける、まさにメッシ中心の戦い方だったが、最後までゴールを奪えなかった。大会MVPにはメッシ、最優秀ゴールキーパーにはドイツのノイアーが選ばれた。
