FIFAワールドカップ・ブラジル大会は6月25日、日本のグループリーグ最終戦が行われ、コロンビアに1−4で敗れた。日本は1分け2敗でグループリーグ最下位となり、敗退が決まった。
勝つしか決勝トーナメント進出の可能性がない日本は、先発に縦パスの名手である青山を入れ、積極的にゴールを狙う。しかし、コロンビアも相手に攻めさせて奪ってから速く攻める、得意の形でたびたび日本のゴールを脅かす。
前半17分、攻め上がった内田の裏のスペースを速攻で突かれると、今野が相手を倒してPKを与え、先制される。さらに守りに入ったコロンビアに苦しむ日本だったが、前半終了間際、カウンターの応酬から本田のクロスに岡崎が頭で合わせ追いついた。
後半立ち上がりはお互い攻め合う展開が続いたが、時間が経つにつれコロンビアは守り中心に切り替え、点を取らなければならない日本の焦りをついて、縦方向のパスをカットしてはカウンターを浴びせる流れに。後半から入ったエース、ハメス・ロドリゲスの個人技もあって3点を奪われた。
大会を通して日本は、持ち味のパス回しにおいて、特にゴール前の最後のところで合わないシーンが目立った。また、コートジボワール戦の2失点、コロンビア戦の1失点は日本の攻撃の強みでもあった、左サイドから奪われており、ストロングポイントが得点につながらなかった。コロンビアが得意の形で決めきったのと対照的だった。
なお、グループCのもう1試合はギリシャがコートジボワールを破って2位通過を決めている。
