サッカーワールドカップのブラジル大会第20日目となる7月4日（日本時間5日）、準々決勝となる決勝トーナメント2回戦は、ドイツがフランスを1-0で下し、4大会連続の準決勝進出を決めた。また、ブラジルはコロンビアに2―1で勝ち、2002年の日韓大会以来、3大会ぶりにベスト4入りを果たした。コロンビアは初の4強を逃した。
なお、ブラジルは先制点を決めた主将のチアゴシウバが累積2回目のイエローカードを受け、次の試合は出場停止に。エースのネイマールも脊椎を骨折し、今大会の残りの試合出場が絶望的となった。
6大会ぶりの優勝を目指すドイツと、悲願の地元優勝を目指すブラジルは、8日午後5時（日本時間9日午前5時）に準決勝を戦う。
