イギリスの「インディペンデント」紙によると、人口56万2000人のルクセンブルクは大多数がカトリックで、EU内でもかなり保守的な国として知られているが、1月に同性婚が法的に認められた。
ロイターによると、長年の友人で、結婚式に参加するテレビ局アナウンサーのステファン・ベルン氏は、「みんな暖かく、前向きに受け止めています」と述べた。
ベッテル首相は2011年にルクセンブルク市長に就任し、同性愛者を公言していた。2014年8月にはロサンゼルス・タイムスの取材に対して、2010年以来同性パートナーとなっていたデストネさんさからプロポーズを受けていたことを明らかにしていた。
