与那国島のいとなみ

与那国島のようにコンビニや娯楽施設がない離島は日本全体には数多くあり、そうした島はよく「なにもない」と表現されます。でも実際は「なにもない」ことはなく、圧倒的な自然があれば、そこで力強く生きている人々の営みもある。「島にあるもの」は「都会にあるもの」の内容は同じではなく、どちらにも価値はあります。

先週末、日本最西端の離島・与那国島(よなぐにじま)へ行きました。

石垣島から琉球エアコミューターのプロペラ機に乗り継ぎ約30分。与那国島には海底遺跡を楽しむダイビングや、カジキ釣りに訪れるお客さんが多いのですが、私の目的は「与那国いとなみネットワーク」という団体が島の人々に向けて開催する情報発信講座の先生でした。

離島の診療医を描いたドラマ「Drコトー診療所」のロケ地になったことでも有名な与那国島。(ちなみに離島界のコネタとして、コトー先生のモデルとなった先生は鹿児島の下甑島に実在です)人口1500人ほどで、3つの集落があり、24の小字があります。

情報発信講座を行ったほかは、島人さんに案内いただき、島のミネラルをたっぷりうけて育つトマトを栽培する農家さんの畑や、資生堂の健康ドリンクとして本土に流通している長命草(ちょうめいそう)工場を訪れたり。漁協でカジキマグロをさばくお母さんに、甘口醤油と酢と島とうがらしで味付けしたお刺身をわけていただいたり、春先だからと油断していたら大きな蚊におそわれたり...。与那国島らしい「営み」にふれさせていただきました。

夜、風情ある赤瓦の古民家で、島めぐりの途中で摘んだリュウキュウヨモギやゼンマイの料理や島酒が並ぶテーブルを囲んだところ、与那国島に来るのは5回目という旅人さんがいらしたので、どうして与那国島だったのか?聞いてみました。

旅人さん曰く、数年前にはじめて与那国島に訪れ、1周約25kmの道のりをただゆっくり歩いたときに「いろんなものが腑に落ちた」と。さほど観光地化が進んでない与那国島には「ずっと変わらない景色」があり、その景色のなかで過ごすうちに、普段の都会生活で感じていた漠然とした違和感の正体が理解できたんだそうです。

情報発信講座では「与那国島の何を伝えていきたいか?」を探すワークショップも行ったのですが、そこで挙がったいくつかの事柄のうち「人の温かさを伝えたい」というものが、心に留りました。

島人さんの言葉を借りると与那国の人は「シャイで人見知り」。その通り、日差しを重厚な雰囲気を感じる方も多いので、島酒も交わさずコミュニケーションをとるには怖じ気づいてしまうのですが、丁寧に会話を重ねていくと温かく熱い人柄がしっかりあらわれる。そんな深さも魅力です。

約1500人が暮らす日本最西端の島には、他地域にもある過疎や高齢化の問題がありますし、国境に位置することから国レベルの問題も抱えています。でも、小さな島だからこそ、自然と人の営みの原点があり、ひとつひとつが島国の営みの原点でもあること。与那国島の「営み」にふれながら、改めてその尊さを感じました。

島で「いろんなものが腑に落ちた」と言った旅人さんの言葉に、そういえば私自身が離島経済新聞社をはじめたころ、同じように感じたことを思い出しました。
