フィギュアスケートの世界選手権が3月30日（日本時間31日）にアメリカ・ボストンで開幕し、男子ショートプログラム（SP）で2季ぶりの優勝を狙う羽生結弦（ANA）が110.56点をマーク。自身が2015年12月のグランプリファイナルで出した110.95点の世界歴代最高得点に迫り首位発進した。初出場の宇野昌磨（愛知・中京大中京高）は90.74点で4位だった。日刊スポーツなどが報じた。
ジャンプを全て成功させた羽生は、技術点は61.52、演技構成点は49.04を記録した。
大会連覇を狙うハビエル・フェルナンデス（スペイン）は98.52点の2位、2月の4大陸選手権を制したパトリック・チャン（カナダ）は94.84点の3位。4回転ジャンプを武器に持つ金博洋（中国）は89.86点で5位だった。
