アメリカ映画界最大の祭典、第86回のアメリカ・アカデミー賞の発表・授賞式が3月2日（日本時間3日）、ハリウッドで行われた。作品賞は、スティーブ・マックイーン監督の「それでも夜は明ける」が受賞。黒人監督の作品がアカデミー作品賞に選ばれたのは初めてだという。
「それでも夜は明ける」は、奴隷制度が廃止される前のアメリカで、南部の農園に売られた実在の北部の自由黒人を描いた作品。アカデミー賞は、ルピダ・ニョンゴが助演女優賞、ジョン・リドリーが脚色賞を受賞した。
黒人監督による作品が作品賞にノミネートされたのは、2009年第82回アカデミー賞のリー・ダニエルズ監督『プレシャス』以来、史上2度目だという。
日本では、3月7日から全国で公開される。
