アメリカの第88回アカデミー賞の演技部門の候補者20人が2年連続で全員白人だったことに抗議して、黒人の映画監督スパイク・リー氏が2月28日の授賞式を欠席する意向を明らかにした。2015年のアカデミー賞で彼は、監督・俳優として映画界での長年の功績をたたえられて、名誉賞を受賞していた。
黒人差別解消に向けて尽力したキング牧師の誕生日にちなんだ休日となる1月18日、リー監督はInstagramでキング牧師の写真を添えた上で以下のように投稿した。
「俳優部門の候補20人全員が、2年連続で白人ばかりってことがあり得るのか？ 他の部門は言うまでもない。2年間に白人俳優40人で、味もそっけもない。私たちは演技ができないというのか？なんだこりゃ！」
このほか俳優ウィル・スミスの妻の黒人女優ジェイダ・ピンケット・スミスさんも同日、Facebookのビデオメッセージでボイコットを訴えた。
バスケットボールの元スター選手、マジック・ジョンソンさんもTwitterで「アカデミー賞で（人種の）多様性が失われていることに失望した」と不満を表明した。
Twitter上では、ハッシュタグ「#OscarsSoWhite（オスカーは真っ白）」という投稿が相次ぐなど波紋が広がっている。
