ビジネスの世界で最も危険な言葉は、「ほかの誰もがやっている」だ ── ウォーレン・バフェット

超一流のビジネスは超一流のやり方でやる。それは法律の次元ではなく、名誉であり信用であり、プライドの問題だった。

誰かがすでにやっていること、それは一種の安全保障になるようだ。「前例がない」はノーを言う時の定番の枕詞だし、他社で「売れている」は、「すぐ追随しろ」という意味に使われる。

これは問題行動においても同じようだ。

2006年、米国企業100社以上がストックオプション(自社株購入権)の付与日を不当操作して大問題になった。自分たちが受け取る利益をかさ上げする、強欲で恥ずべき行為だが、名だたる大企業が当たり前のようにやっていた。バフェットのバークシャー・ハザウェイは不正と無縁だったが、バフェットは傘下の企業に、こう呼びかけた。

「他社が問題含みの行動をしているから、我が社が問題含みの行動をしても大丈夫と思わないように。ビジネスの世界で最も危険な言葉は、5つの単語で表現できます。『ほかの誰もがやっている(Everybody else is doing it)』です」

コンプライアンス(法令遵守)に関するバフェットの基準は厳しい。

ソロモン・ブラザーズの国債不正入札に際し、暫定会長として問題解決に当たったバフェットが「ライン上はダメなのはもちろん、ラインに近くても違反とみなす」と社員に言ったように、違反すれすれも許さない。同業他社がやっていようと、言い訳にはならない。

「会社のために働いて損害を出すのは理解できます。しかし、会社の評判を少しでも損ねたら容赦しません」がバフェットの考え方であり、社員一人ひとりに「コンプライアンス担当」になることを求めた。「いくら稼いだか」がすべての尺度となるウォール街では異例のやり方だ。

ストックオプション問題や法外な役員報酬といった強欲な習慣に関して、後日、バフェットは「最大手の5、6社がそういうことをやめ、その理由について、短い声明を発表すれば変わるでしょう。大物たちは恥をかくのが嫌いですから」という提案を行った。

横並び意識を利用した、皮肉たっぷりの提案だったが、その呼びかけに応えてマイクロソフトやワシントンポストなどが決断すると、ほかの企業も追随することになった。「ほかの誰もがやっている」に甘んじるか、それとも「ほかの誰もやっていない」からこそ決断するか。そこにも超一流とそれ以外の違いが現れる。
