MicrosoftとFacebookのファウンダーが協力して地球温暖化問題に取り組むことになった。今日（米国時間11/30）、マーク・ザッカーバーグは妻のプリシラ・チャン、Microsoftのファウンダー、ビル・ゲイツらと共にBreakthrough Energy Coalitionを立ち上げたことを発表した。

この組織は世界の炭素化合物の排出をゼロにするクリーン・エネルギーの創出を目指している。創立メンバーにはヴァージン・グループのリチャード・ブランソン会長、日本のソフトバンクの孫正義会長、Amazonのジェフ・ベゾスCEO、アリババ・グループのジャック・マー会長、KPCBのジョン・ドーア・ゼネラル・パートナーなど、テクノロジー界の著名人が多数含まれる。

このニュースは、今週パリで国連気候変動会議（COP21)が開催されることにタイミングを合わせ発表された。パリ会議ではオバマ大統領とゲイツとビル・ゲイツがミッション・イノベーション（Mission Innovation）と呼ばれる重要なプロジェクトを発表する予定だ。このプロジェクトではこの5年間に民間セクターが政府の投資と同額を出資し、エネルギーに関する研究を支援する。

Washington Postの記事によると、Mission Innovationにはすでに19ヵ国が参加を決めている。このためクリーン・エネルギーの研究開発のために支出される年間予算は2020年までに200億ドルまで増加するという。

Mission InnovationとザッカーバーグらのBreakthrough Energy Coalitionとは別個のプロジェクトだが、各参加国において緊密に協力していくことになっている。

Breakthrough Energy Coalitionはウェブサイトで「この組織の目的はゼロカーボン化に取り組んでいる国において、公的機関等から生まれる有望かつ規模変更に適したアイディアに投資し、収益化を推進することによって政府投資と民間ビジネスの間のギャップを埋めることだ」と述べている。この組織の特長は柔軟な投資戦略で、公的研究機関などで生まれた有望なアイディアに対し、起業の初期投資からシリーズAに至る資金を提供する。対象となる分野は発電、蓄電、電力移送、産業及び農業における電力利用などを始め、エネルギーシステム全般の効率化だという。
