トルコの海岸に打ち上げられたシリア難民の3歳の男の子の父親が9月3日、ハフポストアラビア版に事故について語った。息子の遺体を確認すると、「できることなら、代わってやりたい」と、肩を落としたという。

男性は36歳のアブダラ・クルディさん。3歳アラン君と5歳のガリプ君、そして35歳の妻・リハンさんとともに、トルコのボドルムからギリシャのコス島へ、ボートで逃れようとしていたシリア系クルド人だ。しかしボートは2日の未明に沈んでしまい、アラン君とガリプ君、リハンさんは溺死。アブダラさんが一人だけ残された。その時のことを、アブダラさんは次のように話した。

「丸1時間、私たちはボートに捕まっていました。息子2人も生きていたんです。ところが大波に襲われて、長男が手からすり抜けてしまいました。次男を抱えていなくてはいけなかったのです。その次男も、溺れてしまって…。妻を探したのですが、彼女も溺れていました」

さらに、アブダラさんは続ける。

「逃げるための費用を工面することは、簡単ではありませんでした。ライフジャケットの費用は、確保できませんでした」

ボートによる脱出は、たくさんの危険を伴う。沈没のリスクはもちろん、すし詰めの乗客、壊れかけのエンジン、暗闇に厳しい天候など、挙げればきりがない。さらに、覆面の集団も、これらのボートを狙っているのだ

カナダのバンクーバーに住むアブダラさんの姉も、クルディ一家がなんとか危険な旅をしなくてもすむよう動いていた。カナダの避難所への難民申請も行ったが認められず、アブダラさんの一家はボートで逃げるしかなかった。
