最大18メートルの記録があり、世界最大級の無脊椎動物として知られるダイオウイカが、2014年に入ってから、日本近海で続々と発見されている。ハフィントンポスト編集部が確認しただけでも、3月26日から4月12日にかけての18日間だけで計5回。4日に1回は全国のどこかでダイオウイカが発見されている計算だ。
水深650メートルから900メートルの深海に生息するダイオウイカがなぜ、続々と浅瀬で見つかっているのか。専門家は「地球温暖化で海水温が上昇した影響もあるのでは？」と指摘する。専門家の分析と相次ぐ発見報告をまとめてみた。

3月26日 新潟県佐渡市で、午前と午後、2回にわたってダイオウイカが水揚げされた。
新潟・佐渡市で26日、午前と午後、2回にわたってダイオウイカが水揚げされた。26日朝、佐渡市で水揚げされたダイオウイカは、体長およそ4.5メートル、重さ33.2kgで、触腕と呼ばれる長い足が2本ともきれいに残っていた。

4月07日 富山市の四方（よかた）漁港で、全長約3.5メートルのダイオウイカが水揚げされた。
4月08日 富山県射水市の新湊漁港で、全長約5.1メートルのダイオウイカが水揚げされた。
4月12日 島根県松江市秋鹿町の海岸沿いで、波打ち際にダイオウイカが浮かんでいるのを、釣り客らが見つけた。体長は約5メートルで、陸に引き揚げたが、間もなく死亡したという。
ダイオウイカが例年にないほど発見される理由ははっきりしていない。ネット上では「大地震の予兆ではないか？」と危惧する声から、「深海魚がブームになったから発見報告が増えただけ」とする冷めた意見まで千差万別だ。専門家の中には、温暖化による海水温上昇が影響している可能性を指摘する声もある。
魚津水族館（同県魚津市）の稲村修館長（５６）は「２日連続で見つかるのは珍しい。地球温暖化で、生息分布が北上している可能性もある」と話し、もともと南方にいるとみられるダイオウイカが日本海に大量に入ってきている可能性を指摘した。

同じく深海に生息するリュウグウノツカイも2014年に入ってから、長崎県平戸などで発見が続いており、海底で何らかの異変が起きているのは間違いなさそうだ。
