ラグビー日本代表のFB五郎丸歩選手（29）の加入が決まった世界最高峰リーグ「スーパーラグビー」（SR）のレッズ（オーストラリア）は11月4日、公式サイト上に日本語で「五郎丸歩選手 レッズファミリーへようこそ」とのメッセージを掲載するとともに、五郎丸選手がチームの真っ赤なジャージ姿で同僚に囲まれる合成写真を載せ、歓迎した。
記事では、五郎丸選手がワールドカップ（W杯）イングランド大会の南アフリカ戦で24得点を挙げるなど、日本代表の3勝に大きく貢献した活躍ぶりを紹介。日本の「国民的ヒーロー」と表現し、加入を歓迎している。
産経ニュースは「南半球を主戦場とするSRでも五郎丸フィーバーが巻き起こりそうだ」として、次のように報じた。
五郎丸が静岡・磐田市内で行った練習などでレッズ加入に関してノーコメントを貫いたにもかかわらず、レッズ側はＨＰに本人のコメントを掲載。「Ｗ杯の経験を糧にＳＲで自分の力を証明するチャンス。ずっと注目しているチームに加入し、新たな仲間と会うのを楽しみにしている」と完全に“先走り”した。レッズのダニエル・ハバート統括ＧＭも「彼はＷ杯でも際立っていた選手。ヤマハでも安定感のあるプレーを続けてきた」と絶賛。
