アメリカのオバマ前大統領の公式フォトグラファーとして知られるピート・サウザ氏がInstagramで1枚の画像を紹介した。そこに写っていたのは…

アメリカのオバマ前大統領の公式フォトグラファーとして知られるピート・サウザ氏が5月24日、Instagramに1枚の画像を投稿した。手をつなぐオバマ夫妻の写真だ。

投稿にはサウザ氏の、「手をつないで」とのコメントが添えられている。

ちょうどトランプ大統領がメラニア夫人に、手つなぎを拒否されているような映像が話題になっていた最中に投稿され、25日午前11時現在で、21万以上の「いいね!」がついた。

サウザ氏が投稿した写真は、2015年3月7日に撮影されたものだ。白人と平等の投票権を求めて行進する黒人のデモ隊が、警官隊に弾圧された「血の日曜日」から50年の記念式典に出席した、夫妻の姿が捉えられていた

サウザ氏はこの時のことについて、「その日、私は『血の日曜日』50年の記念式典の写真を撮るために忙しく動き回っていました。ふとステージの後ろを見ると、大統領がジョン・ルイス議員のスピーチを聞きながら、ファーストレディの手を握っていることに気が付いたのです。スピーチが終わって拍手をする前に、何とかその様子をカメラに収めました。貴重なチャンスでした」などと述べていた

なお、トランプ氏だって24日、ちゃんとメラニア夫人に手をつないでもらえたようだ。バチカン市国のシスティーナ礼拝堂で、ミケランジェロの名作「最後の審判」を鑑賞したトランプ夫妻は、しっかりと手を繋いでいた。

最後の審判」は、世界の終りにキリストが再臨し、人々を裁く場面を描いたもの。神の許しを得て天国へ昇る人々や、神に背いた人たちが地獄へ落ちる様子が表現されている。

縦横10メートル以上を誇る巨大な壁画を前に、トランプ夫妻は何を思い、手を繋いだのだろうか――。
