イスラム教スンニ派の武装組織「イラク・シリア・イスラム国」 (ISIS) は、アルカイダですら「過激すぎる」と非難しているジハード集団である。ISISは2014年6月初旬にイラクで奇襲攻撃を開始し、イラク第2の都市モスルを難なく占領した。
この集団は残忍な凶行を繰り広げ、公開処刑を行って世論の批判を批判を浴びている。ISISの軍勢は現在、首都のバグダットに迫っている。シリア、イラク、レバノンの広範な地域で、イスラムのカリフ（「代行者」「後継者」を意味するイスラム国家の最高権威者）による支配を行うのが彼らの最終目標なのだろうか？

モスル
イラク第2の都市モスルを6月10日に占領した。イラク警察と軍の兵士たちは、自分たちの軍服や装備、下着までも床に置き捨てて真夜中に逃亡した。
ファルージャ
1月3日にイラク西部の主要都市であるファルージャを占領した。
ティクリート
6月11日に、サダム・フセインの故郷であるティクリートを占領した。
タルアファル
6月16日、タルアファルを支配下に置いた。ここはシリアの国境から近く、スンニ派とシーア派の住民が混在している場所である。
ラマディ
2014年1月初旬、アンバール県の州都であるラマディを制圧した。
ルトバ
6月21日、ルトバを支配下に置いた。ルトバはヨルダンとサウジアラビアの国境からおよそ110キロ離れた場所にある。
アル=カーイム
6月21日に、シリアの国境がある町アル＝カーイムを占領した。
【紛争中の都市】
バイジ
反政府勢力はバイジにあるイラク最大の石油精製所を制圧するために6月11日からイラク軍と戦闘を開始した。バイジはバクダットから北に約250キロしか離れていない。バイジの精製所はイラク国内の石油精製の1/4を担う。
バクアーバ
6月17日、武装勢力はバクアーバ市での戦闘を開始した。バクアーバはバクダットの北約65キロに位置する。バクアーバ西部地域のいくつかはISISの支配下に置かれていると伝えられている。しかし、バクアーバ市は陥落していない。
