姉妹と共に逃げた家族の一人は「村に戻れば自分たちの命が危ない」と語った。彼らの家はすでに村人たちによって荒らされたという。アムネスティ・インターナショナルによると、彼らは最高裁判所に保護を申請したが、地元の警察から嫌がらせも受けているという。

申請には、レイプを罰則とすることに抗議する4万を超える署名が集まった。命令を下した村の評議会は姉妹に対し、顔を黒く塗って裸で町を歩き回ることを命じている。

インドの強姦発生率の高さに対する政府の取り組みにもかかわらず、地方の議会による刑罰は続いている。昨年、20才の女性がパートナー以外の別の男性と関係を持ったとして、村の長老たちが集団強姦を命じる事件があり、大きなニュースとなった。BBCの当時の報道によると、この村の議会は選挙によって選ばれていないが「彼女の行動は地域のおきてに反する」とした。
