シリア文化省は8月23日、世界遺産に認定されているシリア・パルミラ遺跡のバールシャミン神殿がIS（イスラム国）に爆破されたと明らかにした。BBCなどが報じた。
イギリスに本拠地を置くシリア人権監視団によると、爆破は1カ月前に行われたという。バールシャミン神殿は古代ローマ時代の1世紀に建設されたが、シリア文化省文化財博物館総局のアブドゥルカリム局長は、「大量の爆発物を仕掛け、神殿を破壊した。神像が安置されていた場所は破壊され、周囲の円柱も崩れ落ちた」と述べた。
パルミラ遺跡はシリアの首都ダマスカスの北東約230キロ、シリア砂漠の中央にあるローマ帝国時代の都市遺跡。凱旋門、列柱付きの大通り、コリント式の円柱に囲まれたベル神殿、半円形のローマ劇場、公共浴場、墓地の谷などがある。2011年の民主化運動「アラブの春」以降シリアの治安が悪化し、墓の盗掘などが確認され、2013年に危機遺産リストに記載された。
2015年5月にはISが侵攻して制圧し、遺跡の石像を破壊し、女性や子供を含む400人を殺害した。8月18日には遺跡の管理責任者だった考古学者のハリド・アサド氏を斬首して処刑した。
