なぜジャーナリストは戦場へ向かうのか「安倍政権の対応より論ずべきことがある」シンポジウム開催へ

戦場を取材するジャーナリストへの批判が強まり、ジャーナリストの側にも萎縮する傾向が生まれている。ジャーナリストが戦場に赴く理由とは何か。

2月7日、シリアへの渡航を計画していたカメラマンのパスポートを、外務省が取り上げた。4日には、「イスラム国」に殺害されたとみられる国際ジャーナリストの後藤健二さんについて、自民党の高村副総裁が「どんなに使命感があったとしても、蛮勇というべきものであった」と述べるなど、戦場を取材するジャーナリストへの批判が強まり、ジャーナリストの側にも萎縮する傾向が生まれているという。

この状況を受け、戦場で取材を続けてきたジャーナリストらが2月17日、東京都渋谷区で緊急シンポジウムを開催する。ジャーナリストが戦場に赴く理由について、一般の方と共に考える機会にしたいという。

「人質事件のあと、安倍政権の対応について盛んに議論されています。しかし、本当に論ずべきなのは、後藤さんがなぜ危険な地域での取材を行なう必要があったのか、ということなのではないでしょうか」。

シンポジウム登壇者の一人、藤原亮司さんはそう指摘する。藤原さん自身も、パレスチナやシリアなど中東各地で取材を続けてきたジャーナリストだ。藤原さんはハフポスト日本版の取材に対し、以下のように語った。

「政府が行くなというから取材に行かない、本当にそれでいいのかと感じます。最近では報道機関の側からも、『政府から自粛要請が出ているのに、取材に行くなんてけしからん』という意見すら出ています。しかし、ジャーナリストが『危険だから取材に入らない』となったら、誰が報じるのでしょうか。

人々が暮らしていたところに戦争が起きて、日常が破壊される。家族や友人を亡くして笑顔が消える。その一方で、戦争の正当性を主張する者もいる。ジャーナリストが現地で取材して、初めて見えてくる問題もあるのです。政府によって制御された取材では、多角的に問題を捉えることができなくなります。

戦争は、決して遠い国の何処かで起きている特別なことではないのです。戦地にも人々が暮らしています。その生活、国を捨てて難民として生活する人もいます。それらの人にも当然、我々と何ら変わらない日常があり、どんな紛争や抑圧といった不条理のもとでも、それを何とか守ろうと暮らしている」。

藤原さんは、2013年にシリアで化学兵器が使われたとされる問題をあげ、当時の世界の無関心が「イスラム国」の台頭につながったとする考え方があることを紹介した。

「アメリカは、シリアのアサド政権が化学兵器を使っていたら介入すると言っていました。しかし、同国の世論・議会は軍事介入に消極的で、結局そのままにしてしまった。

このとき、シリアでアサドに迫害されていた人々は失望し、世界から見捨てられたと感じました。それが、反アメリカ、そしていわゆる『イスラム国』へ傾倒するきっかけになる人々が増えた一因でもあると考えられます。世界の無関心が、根本にあるのです」。

戦争という過酷な状況に置かれた人々。それでも懸命に生きていこうとする姿を、ジャーナリストは捉え、伝える。ジャーナリストが何を伝えようとしてきたのか、また、政府からの渡航自粛などに、どう対応しようとしているのか。この機会に考えてみてはどうだろうか。
