イタリア南部のプーリア州アンドリア郊外で旅客列車同士が正面衝突し、少なくとも25人が死亡、50人以上が負傷した。

現場は州都バーリから西へ40キロほどの場所にある。事故を起こした列車はアンドリアとコラートを結ぶ単線区間のローカル路線で、4両編成の両方の列車は先頭の2車両が大破した。現地では主に通勤通学の路線として利用されている。

列車に乗っていたある女性は「私はめちゃめちゃになった列車の残骸の上を裸足で歩いていました。残骸にに埋まっていた夫をなんとか救い出しましたが、その時、バラバラになっている遺体を目にしました」と述べた。夫は「列車内はめちゃくちゃになっていましたが、何も聞こえてきませんでした」と語った。

また、ある生存者は「意識を失っていましたが、何か音楽が流れてきた時に意識が戻りました。その時には自分が床に投げ出されていたことに気がつきました。運転士も床にたたきつけられていました。5分くらいしたら何とか立ち上がることができましたが、その時に見た光景は地獄そのものでした」と証言した。

BBCによると、コラート市のマッシーモ・マッジーリ市長は、列車は航空機が墜落したかのように大破していたと語った。

また、イタリアのマテオ・レンツィ首相はTwitterで、「犠牲者とその家族に涙と悲しみを禁じ得ないだけでなく、大きな憤りもこみ上げてくる。プーリアで今朝何が起きたのか明らかにさせる」と述べた。

救助にあたった警官は、「現場で遺体や助けを求める声、泣き叫ぶ人たちがいた。私の人生の中で最悪の光景だった」と語った。
