テニスの４大大会の今季最終戦、全米オープンが8月31日、ニューヨークで開幕し、男子シングルス1回戦で、昨年準優勝した第4シードの錦織圭は、世界ランキング41位のベノワ・ペール（フランス）に4-6、6-3、6-4、6-7、4-6で逆転負けした。
47NEWSは「昨年準優勝の錦織は第4セットをタイブレークで逆転されて失うと、第5セットは最後までショットと動きに切れが戻らなかった」と伝えた。
まさかの初戦敗退。錦織は試合後、敗因について次のように語った。
――敗因は？
第４セットのタイブレークを引きずっていた。なかなか彼をどう崩していくのか、最後は特に頭に入っていなかった。それが一番の負けた原因。自分のテニスが悪かったというよりも、相手に好きなプレーをさせてしまった。
