メガマウスを公開解剖　巨大な口に見学者もビックリ

深海に棲む幻のサメ「メガマウス」の公開解剖が5月6日に実施された。この個体は4月14日に、静岡市清水区の由比漁港で水揚げされた体長約4.4メートルのメス。巨大な口で知られるメガマウスは非常に個体数が少なく、今回の捕獲は世界で58例目、日本では17例目だという。

深海に棲む幻のサメ「メガマウス」の公開解剖が5月6日に実施された。この個体は4月14日に、静岡市清水区の由比漁港で水揚げされた体長約4.4メートルのメス。巨大な口で知られるメガマウスは非常に個体数が少なく、今回の捕獲は世界で58例目、日本では17例目だという。

この日の公開解剖は、東海大学の海洋科学博物館（静岡市）で実施された。連休中ということもあり、見学には大勢の人々が押し寄せた。見学者がTwitterに続々と写真をアップしている。

大きな口で一見すると凶暴そうなメガマウスだが、実際に食べるのはプランクトン。大人しい性格をしているという。海洋科学博物館の発表によると、メガマウスの生態は以下の通り。

全世界の熱帯域から温帯域の沿岸から外洋にかけて分布しています。昼間は水深100～200mを中心とした深海にいて、夜は餌を求めて水深10～20mのところまで浮上します。大きな口で主に動物プランクトンを捕食します。口内に餌をおびき寄せるための発光器があると考える研究者もいます。大きくなると全長は約6mになります。
