1974年、日本のエネルギー源の主力が石炭から石油へと切り替わるにつれ、三菱は軍艦島の炭鉱を閉鎖し、島は無用の長物となった。

そこに残されたものは、社会の残骸だ。それらはあまりに不気味で、映画「007 スカイフォール」の舞台セットの参考にされた。

軍艦島に行くには、ボートでのツアーがあり、廃墟回りができる。また、Googleストリートビューでもバーチャルツアーができるし、冒険好きな写真家ブロガーの作品でも楽しめる。

いずれの方法にしても、いかに急速に繁栄した街が崩壊していった様子が冷徹に伝わってくる。

軍艦島は、福岡県の八幡製鉄所などとともに、「明治日本の産業革命遺産 九州・山口関連地域」として2015年の世界文化遺産登録を目指し推薦されている
