ペットボトルの樹脂を食べる細菌、日本の研究チームが発見

慶応大学、京都工芸繊維大学などの研究チームが、ペットボトルや衣服の素材に使われるペット樹脂を食べて成長する細菌を世界で初めて発見した。

慶応大学、京都工芸繊維大学などの研究チームは3月11日、ペットボトルや衣服の素材に使われるペット樹脂を食べて成長する細菌を世界で初めて発見した。「自然界ではペット樹脂は分解されない」との通説が覆されることになった。

この細菌は、発見場所の大阪府堺市にちなんで「イデオネラ・サカイエンシス201-F6」と名付けられた。ペット樹脂を分解するだけでなく、栄養源として増殖する性質があるという。3月11日、アメリカの科学誌「サイエンス」に論文が掲載された

■環境に負荷をかけないリサイクル技術を生む可能性

「ペット樹脂」の正式名称は、ポリエチレンテレフタレート(PET)。石油を原料にして作られ、ペットボトルや衣類、容器などに幅広く利用されているが、現在のリサイクル技術では熱処理や化学反応が必要となり、エネルギー消費量が多いことが課題になっていた。

研究チームは、ペット樹脂製品の処分施設に周辺の土壌を採取して詳しく調べたところ、ペット樹脂を分解することができる新種を発見したという。研究チームの慶応大学の宮本憲二准教授はNHKニュースに対して、「石油資源にも限りがあり、環境への負担が少ない新しいリサイクル技術を生み出せるよう研究を進めていきたい」とコメントしている。
