ポーランドの下院議会は10月6日、与党「法と正義」が成立を目指していた人工妊娠中絶をほぼ全面的に禁止する法案を賛成58、反対352、棄権18で否決した。中絶禁止法案に反対する女性たちの抗議の声が、与党をはじめとする政治家を動かした形となった。

国民の90%以上がカトリックのポーランドでは、現行法でもヨーロッパの中で最も厳しい中絶禁止法が1993年に施行されている。中絶が認められるのはレイプ、近親相姦、母体に危険が及ぶ時、胎児に先天性異常がある時で、違反した場合、最高で禁錮2年の量刑が科される。

BBCによると、今回の改正中絶禁止法案は、中絶が母体に危険が及ぶ場合だけに限られ、量刑は最高で禁錮5年まで引き上げられるというものだった。この中絶規制の強化案は、反中絶の活動団体が45万人の署名を集めて法案化された。当初はカトリック教会の支持も受けていたが、司教たちから「中絶をした女性を投獄するのは支持できない」という声が上がっていた。

首都ワルシャワ、グダニスク、ウッジ、ヴロツワフ、クラクフなどポーランド国内の各都市でおよそ10万人が参加した大規模デモが起き、女性たちは黒い服に身を包み、「私たちには医者が必要だ。宣教者じゃない!」などと抗議の声を上げた。

ロイターによると、法案を推進していた「法と正義」党首のヤロスワフ・カチンスキ元首相は議会で、「我が党は引き続き生命を守る支援をする。そして、生命を守るという政策は引き続き維持していくが、今後は熟慮しながら進めていくことになる」と述べた。
