当局ではアシアナ航空214便がなぜ極めて低速で着地したのか調査を進めている。また、乗客は墜落の数秒前に飛行機が異常なほど低空だったと気づいていた。

ハフィントンポストは、この不運な214便の速度と高度について、着地前の5分間と二日前の同機の経路とをインフォグラフィックスで比較している。

墜落の経路

フライトデータにより、7月6日にサンフランシスコ国際空港で墜落したアシアナ航空のジェット旅客機が、2日前の同便より低空かつ低速で飛行していたことが分かった。調査員によると、214便は着陸態勢時に基準スピードよりも「著しい低速」で飛行していた。滑走路に入った時の飛行速度はおよそ時速121マイルで、通常の時速157マイルを大幅に下回る。乗客と目撃者の両方が、「あまりに低速すぎるため安全な着陸はできないと思った」と語っている。墜落後180名以上が負傷のため病院へ搬送されたが、307名の乗客・乗員中305名が生還した。着地前5分間の飛行の様子は、グラフのとおり。
