シリアの首都ダマスカス南部にあるヤルムーク難民キャンプは2014年2月、1枚の画像によって世界的に有名になった

通りを埋め尽くす人。1万8000人以上の難民が内戦に怯え、飢餓に苦しんでいた。

そんななか、人々の安らぎとなっていたのがエイハム・アハマドのピアノだった

アハマドは青空の下にピアノを持ち出し、瓦礫だらけの通りで、家族や、友達、隣人らとともに歌った。内戦、飢餓、放浪、キャンプ。人々の感情を、歌に込めた。

ところが2015年4月、難民キャンプをIS(イスラム国)が制圧。アハマドは妻と子供2人をヤルムーク近隣のヤルダに避難させたあと、自身もピアノをトラックに載せて逃れる途中に、ISの戦闘員に停止を求められた。

「音楽はイスラム教で禁止されている」。

そう言って、戦闘員はアハマドのピアノを焼いた。その日は、アハマドの誕生日でもあった。

このとき、アハマドのなかで何かが死んでしまった。古くて、ボロボロのピアノだった。それでも、アハマドにとっては、大切な宝物だったのだ。

「ピアノはただの楽器ではなかったのです。友達が死んだも同然でした」。

アハマドは「ここを出よう」と決めた。

こうして、27歳のアハマドの旅は始まった。家族はヨーロッパに渡ったあと呼び寄せることを決意して、危険な旅に出た。

アハマドは「海を渡る旅人の日記」と題して、旅の記録をFacebookに投稿し始めた。また、ワールドポストにも、画像やアラビア語の音声メッセージを送ってくれている。

アハマドの旅はまだまだ続いているが、以下にこれまでのアハマドの日記を、彼の言葉のまま掲載する。

シリアを出発(9月初旬)

人生が止まったとき、私はキャンプを後にした。限界だった。去らなければならなかった。

ヤルムークからダマスカスへ向かった。しかし、そこもまた苦しかった。そのため、私はホムスに向かい、さらに、ハマ、そしてトルコの国境へと移動した。密航業者には約5000ドル(約60万円)払った。それでもその行程には多くの問題があった。

トルコの国境・アンタキヤまでは、5時間かけて山の中を歩いた。そこからイズミルまでは16時間、バスに乗った。

奇妙な旅の途中、多くのことを目撃した。密航業者は、私たちから金を取った。しかしそれは、私たちの安全を保証するものではなかった。旅にはキャンプで一緒に住んでいたシリア人やパレスチナ難民もたくさんいた。

イズミルについた時、沢山の人が路上や公園、モスクで昼夜を過ごす人々を見た。ホテルの滞在費用を工面できないのだ。

私はゴムボートでヨーロッパに渡ることにした。しかしボートを見ると、70人くらいが乗っていた。マッチ箱の中のマッチのように重なりあい、詰め込まれていた。

ボートはひ弱な感じがした。しかし我が子アーメドとケナン、父母、妻のために、ヨーロッパにたどり着かなければならない。ドイツに行って、家族のための場所を見つけなくては。だから私はボートに乗ることにした。約1250ドル(約15万円)を支払った。

乗り込んだボートは、エンジンが錆びつき、腐食していて驚いた。エンジンは何度もかからなくなった。密輸業者は私たちを助けることなどしなかった。ただ叫び、人々に向かって金切り声をあげていただけだった。サメがボートの近くを泳いでいた。私のすぐ近くにも来た。

だから、翌朝まで待って、もう一度、試すことにした。

ああ、地中海よ。私はエイハム、あなたの優しい波を進みたい。人々はただ、ヨーロッパに行くことだけが願いなのだ。そのために法外な代金を払った。

乗っているゴムボードは転覆しやすく、そうなれば、あなたの深い深い峡谷に命が飲み込まれることになる。

解決策は何だろう? トルコがギリシャとの国境を開けば陸路で行くことがでるのに。そうすれば私たちは、死のボートから逃れることができる。

ボートは午前5時に出発することになっていた。密航業者は私たちに、電話の電源を切っておくように言った。トルコとギリシャの湾岸警備隊に明かりが見つからないようにするためだ。私は森のなかで約1時間だけ眠った。

目が覚めたとき、一緒に旅する男たちがゴムボートの用意をしていた。本来なら密航業者がやる作業だが、私たちは、安全に旅したい。だから自分たちでやった。密航業者とは、ボートに乗るのは40人以上にはならないと取引していた。でも結局、67人も乗った。

渡るのは黒海か地中海のようだった。非常に波が強いと言われている場所だ。だけどこの日は海は静かでスムーズだった。神よ、ありがとうございます。私は、神が私たちを守ってくれると信じた。

ヨーロッパ沿岸に到着(2015年9月16日)

ついにヨーロッパ国境に到着した。ギリシャのレスボス島だ。しかし、私が見たものはやっぱり酷いものだった。多くの人々が、中には高齢者もいるのに、路上で眠っていた。本当にがっかりした。

ヨーロッパはヤルムークの私の家より、美しくはなかった。しかし、キャンプの武装勢力がいるから、もうあそこでの生活は耐えられない。状況が改善されるならば、すぐにでもキャンプに戻りたい。

ヨーロッパは自由の地だ。今、私はヨーロッパにいる。ここでは、ヤルムークの生活や人々のことを歌いつづけることができる。
