イギリスに拠点を置くシリア人権監視団によると、内戦が続くシリア北西部イドリブ県の反体制派が支配する地域で4月4日、化学兵器の毒ガスとみられる攻撃で少なくとも子供11人を含む民間人58人が死亡した。アルジャジーラなどが報じた。

シリア人権監視団によると、イドリブ県のハンシャイフンで多くの人が窒息したり失神したりし、なかには口から泡を吹く人もいたという。医療関係者は、毒ガスが使われた時にみられる症状だという。

ハンシャイフンに近い病院の医師はCNNに、「午前7時30分頃、病院に125人ほどが搬送されました。25人がすでに死亡しており、7割から8割が子供と女性でした」と語った。

アサド政権は2013年に化学兵器の廃棄に応じたが、その後も塩素ガスなどによる攻撃を続けていると批判されている。反体制勢力は4日、アサド政権のシリア軍が空爆したものと批判したが、シリア軍は声明で「断固として否定する」と語った。

「シリア軍は化学兵器、毒物を使用したテロリスト集団とその支援者たちを拘束する。彼らは、自分たちの卑劣な行為と計略を達成するため、何の罪もない民間人の命を軽々と奪っている」

ニューヨークタイムズによると、国連安全保障理事会は5日、緊急会合を開催する。

アメリカ・ホワイトハウスのショーン・スパイサー報道官は、今回の攻撃無実の人たちに対する「非難されるべき行為」であり、「文明世界では看過できない」と非難した。

しかしスパイサー報道官は、「シリアの政治的な現実を考えれば、アメリカのアサド政権に対する姿勢を変えることはない」と付け加えた。
