台風8号は7月10日、午前7時前に鹿児島県阿久根市付近に上陸したあと九州南部を通過し、午後3時現在、四国の南南東約40kmの海上を時速40kmの速さで東に進んでいるとみられる。
台風の接近や前線の活動もあり、九州から東北にかけて天気が不安定な状態となっている。今後西日本は10日夜にかけて、東日本は11日の朝にかけて、局地的には1時間に80ミリの猛烈な雨が降るおそれがあり、気象庁は注意を呼びかけている。
気象庁によると、台風8号の影響による各地の大雨の予想は次の通り。

なお、大雨の影響で、住宅への浸水や道路への被害なども発生。山形県の南陽市では吉野川が氾濫し、濁流が市街地にも流れ込んだ。南陽市と白鷹町を結ぶ山形鉄道フラワー長井線では、川にかかる橋の付け根の土手が流され、線路が宙づりになっているという。
