アメリカ・アイオワ州プレザント・ヒルに住む103歳の女性ルーリーン・スタイニンガーさんは、これまでに生きてきた中で多くのことを経験してきた。2回の世界的な不況、ポリオワクチンの開発、人類初の月面着陸などなど……。

しかしスタイニンガーさんは、もうすぐやってくる新しい歴史的なイベントを自分の目で見たいと思っている。アメリカ史上初の女性大統領の誕生だ。

元学校教師のスタイニンガーさんが7歳のとき、1920年の8月にアメリカ合衆国憲法修正第19条が批准され、初めて女性に選挙権が与えられた

CNNによると、スタイニンガーさんは1936年に選挙権を獲得して以来、投票を欠かしたことがない。スタイニンガーさんは、11月の本選挙でついに、女性大統領候補のヒラリー・クリントンに投票することが初めて可能になると話した。

「女性に投票できるようになるとは想像もできませんでした。これまでの大統領候補は全て男性で、私もずっとそういうものだと思っていましたから」と、スタイニンガーさんは話した。

スタイニンガーさんの他にも、女性に選挙権が与えられる前に生まれた女性の102歳のジェリー・エメットさんが登壇し、26日夜の民主党全国大会でクリントンに投票したアリゾナ州代議員の数を発表した。

スタイニンガーさんはヒラリー・クリントンを称賛しているが、しかし、共和党代表のドナルド・トランプが大統領になったらアメリカはどうなってしまうのかと心配している。

「非常に驚きです。なんでトランプがこれほど人気なのか全く分かりません」とスタイニンガーさんは語る。「もしトランプが大統領になったら、持ち直すのに何年もかかるような国の危機が訪れてしまうことでしょう」

そのため、スタイニンガーさんは11月の本選挙ではクリントンを大統領に選ぶ以外の選択肢はないと話した。

「私には大きな仕事が控えています。それまでは何としても生きなければなりません!」とスタイニンガーさんがCNNに話した。「その後はいつ死んでも構いません。でもクリントンが大統領になるまでは長生きしてみせますよ」
