イスラム国に拘束された湯川遥菜さん、変転した人生の再出発

シリアで、イスラム教スンニ派過激組織「イスラム国」に拘束されたとみられる湯川遥菜(はるな)さん(42歳)。救出交渉の長期化が懸念される中、湯川さん解放の可能性はいまだ知れず、日本の外務省の担当者は「情報収集に取り組んでいる」と繰り返すばかりだ。

霧に包まれているのは、同氏の安否だけではない。名も知れない日本人がなぜ、シリアの紛争地帯に身を置いていたのか。同氏の親族や知人、ブログなどをたどると、人生の再出発を探りつつ、途上国に夢を追い、紛争地帯で「生きがい」にたどりついた湯川さんの変転の軌跡が浮かんできた。

<人生最後のチャンス>

「何者だ。なぜ、ここにいる」。拘束された湯川さんらしき人物は、ネットに流れた映像の中で、こう尋問された。これは、湯川さんが長い間、自らに問い続けてきたことかもしれない、と友人らは語る。

湯川さんが最初にシリアのアレッポ地区を訪れたのは今年4月。友人や家族には、人生で成功する最後のチャンス、と語っていた。さらに「危険度」の高い地域を求めて、9月にはソマリアへの渡航も計画していた。「生活の限界を感じているんだと言っていたように思います」と父、正一さん(74)は振り返る。

4月にアレッポ地区で湯川さんに出会ったというジャーナリストの後藤健二さんによると、湯川さんはシリアで同月、自由シリア軍(FSA)の戦闘員に一時拘束され尋問を受けたが、その後にFSAのアジア系メンバーと親しくなった。湯川さんのブログ書き込みや正一さんによると、現地の病院で不足している医薬品や靴を日本から運ぶ作業を続ける中で、イスラムへの関心が強まっていった。

2度目に日本を出たのは6月。後藤さんと共にまずイラクに渡り、ベテラン記者の取材方法や紛争地域での活動方法を学んだ。トルコを経由し、シリア入りしたのは7月下旬だった。

<ネット上の民間軍事会社>

湯川さんは、武器の扱い方を学んだことは一度もなく、自分は「超やさしい」人柄だと述べる一方、ネットでは、自身を「セキュリティコンサルタント」とも呼んでいた。日本の極右勢力への関心を見せることもあり、今年に入り海外で警備などを請け負う民間軍事会社を立ち上げた。ただ、その分野での経験はまったくなかったという。

湯川さんが設立した民間軍事会社「PMC」を訪ねてみた。登記されていた東京の住所にあったのは、小さなオフィスが集まるビルの一室。しかし、企業活動の実態はうかがえず、実際にはネット上にしか存在しない会社だったようだ。会社のサイトは、アレッポで歩兵用アサルトライフル、AK━47をぎこちなく試射する湯川さんの動画を紹介している。

ジャーナリストの後藤さんは、湯川さんの穏やかな性格が、シリアのFSAに受け入れられた理由の一つだったと話す。「湯川さんはものすごく親しみやすい感じの人です。話し方も攻撃的ではなく、多少は英語が話せなくてもソフトな雰囲気づくりっていうのを自然にできる人なんです」。

<自分探しの旅>

そうした穏やかで友好的な人柄とは裏腹に、湯川さんは今に至るまでの人生で過酷な変化を経験している。10月に書き込んだブログには、自身の性格について語るこんな言葉がある。

「いじめの経験から、心を読まれないようにしたり、寂しく辛くても心を読まれないように明るく振る舞い、辛さを見せないことが技というか、本心を隠す事が身についてしまった。ビジネスでは大いに役立った。相手に考えを読まれないようにして相手を負かすことが、戦に勝利する事につながっていた」

湯川さんは千葉県内の高校を卒業後、2000年ごろに軍用ヘルメットなどを販売するミリタリーショップを開業した。父の正一さんと湯川さんのブログによると、この店は3─4年後に倒産し、借金を抱えた湯川さんは夜逃げをして、公園で1カ月近く生活をすることもあった。その借金は、正一さんがアパートを売り払って返済したという。

思い詰めた湯川さんは2008年頃自殺を図り、局部を切り落とした。この時は妻に止められ、病院で一命を取り留めたが、その妻はその2年ほど後に肺がんで亡くなったという。

「失敗した時は女性として生きようとも思っていたので、後は運命に任せた」と、湯川さんは自身のブログで語っている。名前を「正行」から「遥菜」に変え、日中戦争当時に「東洋のマタハリ」や「男装の麗人」の異名をとった日本軍スパイ、川島芳子の生まれ変わりを自称していた。

湯川さんは「頑張れ日本 全国行動委員会」のイベントにも参加している。田母神俊雄元航空幕僚長とのツーショット写真もネットで公開。同団体の茨城県本部代表、木本信男さんにPMCの顧問を依頼している。

湯川さんの安否を気遣う友人たちは、彼が自分探しの旅に出たのだろう、と語る。今年4月、湯川さんはブログにこうつづっている。

「残りの人生で多くの人を救いたい。僕は2008年頃から何度も絶望や死に直面している。今考えると死なずに救われてきたのは、歴史的偉業を成し遂げる使命が有るのだと考えざるをえない」。
