赤崎勇さん、天野浩さん、中村修二さんの3人がノーベル物理学賞を受賞 「めちゃめちゃ緊張した」【画像集】

ノーベル賞の授賞式が12月10日、スウェーデンのストックホルムで開かれ、日本からは赤崎勇・名城大教授(85)、天野浩・名古屋大教授(54)、中村修二・米カリフォルニア大サンタバーバラ校教授(60)の3人が物理学賞を受賞した。

ノーベル賞の授賞式が12月10日、スウェーデンのストックホルムで開かれ、日本からは赤崎勇・名城大教授(85)、天野浩・名古屋大教授(54)、中村修二・米カリフォルニア大サンタバーバラ校教授(60)の3人が物理学賞を受賞した。ノルウェーのオスロでは同日、平和賞の授賞式があり、パキスタン人のマララ・ユスフザイさんが受賞している

青色発光ダイオード(青色LED)の開発で物理学賞を受賞した赤崎さんら3人は、スウェーデンのカール16世グスタフ国王からメダルを受け取った。

授賞式で選考委員会のアン・ルリエー委員は、古代の火や19世紀のエジソンによる白熱電球の発明など、青色LEDの開発に至る歴史を紹介。「3氏は世界中が断念する中、多大な忍耐と少しの幸運で(材料の)窒化ガリウムの結晶を得た。2000回以上実験し、ついに成功した」と、功績を讃えた

日本の受賞者は、2012年に医学生理学賞を受賞した山中伸弥・京都大教授以来で、計22人になる。

産経ニュースによると、授賞式を終えた中村さんは「やっと終わったな」と笑顔で話した。天野さんは「めちゃめちゃ緊張した」とほっとした様子を見せ、赤崎さんは「長い道のりでした」と振り返ったという。

赤崎さんと天野さんは名古屋大で高品質な窒化ガリウムの結晶を作り、1989年、世界で初めて青色LEDを実現した。中村氏は徳島県の日亜化学工業で、窒化ガリウムによる明るい青色LEDを独力で作り93年に、世界初の製品化に成功した。
