スーザン・カーランド氏はオーストラリアを代表する社会学者で、国内のムスリムコミュニティの代表する人物としても良く知られている。カーランド氏は自分のツイッターが毎日のように「毒に満ちた投稿でいっぱい」になっていることに慣れてしまったと話す。「私のように『申し訳なさそうな態度をしていない』女性のところには、多くのヘイト(憎悪)が向けられるんです」と彼女は話した

「匿名を盾に取った“勇敢な自由の戦士”の方々から毎日のように、何通ものツイートやFacebookメッセージを受け取ります。彼らは、私がムスリムなので、抑圧することや、殺人、戦争や性差別が好きだと言ってくるんですよ」とカーランド氏は金曜日のシドニーモーニングヘラルド紙の論説に書いた。「インターネット上で言われるのは、オーストラリアから出て行けだとか、早く死ねだとか、私の見た目に対する侮辱ですね(特にイスラム女性が被るヒジャブについて)。あとは、私が隠れみのを着たジハード戦士だとか、この国を乗っ取ろうと企てているとか」。

カーランド氏はこういった荒らしへの対抗策として、今までにたくさんの方法を試してきた。話し合いを試みたり、ブロックしてみたり、単に無視を決め込んだりといった具合だ。しかし、イスラム教徒として、こういった方法は「しっくりこなかった」という。コーランがいう『光で暗闇を追い払う』という考え方を、私が実践しているとは感じられなかったのです」と彼女は述べた。「私のもとに醜い悪口が届く度に、自分から進んで世界に善を施さなければならないと感じました」。

カーランド氏はそこで独特な方法を考え出した。それは、悪意に満ちたツイートを受け取る度に、1オーストラリアドルをユニセフに寄付する、というものだ。

カーランド氏はメルボルンのモナシュ大学で教えており、テレビ司会者のワリード・アリーさんと結婚している。ユニセフに寄付することに決めたのは理由があるという。

「特にユニセフに寄付をしたいのは、とても悲惨な状況にある子供たちに頻繁に支援をしている組織だからです。そういった悲惨な状況は、憎しみが原因となって起こっています。戦争、強欲が理由で起こっている貧困、不公平、暴力といった問題です。こういった子どもたちは、憎しみに対する薬を当然受け取るべきだと思ったのです」。

今週、ユニセフのアメリカ支部とオーストリア支部がツイッターで彼女に感謝のツイートを投稿した。
