アメリカのトランプ政権は、シリア北西部イドリブ県で起きたサリンとみられる化学兵器の攻撃で少なくとも子供27人を含む72人が死亡したことを受け、シリアのアサド政権の関連施設に巡航ミサイルで攻撃した。NBCニュースが報じた。

米軍は地中海の軍艦から59発の巡航ミサイル「トマホーク」をシリア中部ホムスにありるシリア軍の空軍基地に向けて発射したという。

ドナルド・トランプ大統領は4月6日、大統領専用機内で記者団の質問に答え、アサド政権に対し「何かしらの対応が必要だ」と述べていた。

レックス・ティラーソン国務長官は、今回の攻撃にバッシャール・アサド大統領に忠実なシリア政権が関与したことは「間違いない」と語り、「シリアの未来に、アサド大統領の役割があるとは思わない」と批判した

「我々の考え、また入手した情報によれば、この攻撃の責任がバッシャール・アル・アサド大統領が率いるシリア政権にあることは間違いない」と、ティラーソン氏は記者団に語った。

トランプ氏はオバマ前大統領と違い、アサド大統領の退陣を要求していない。しかし、記者団に「アサド大統領は恐ろしいことをしたと思う」と語った。

「シリアで起こったことは人類の恥だ。私は、アサド大統領が実行したと思っている。何かしらの対応が必要だ」と彼は付け加えた。

ロイター通信によると、現在アメリカ国防総省とホワイトハウスが、この攻撃に適用すべき軍事的選択肢について協議している。

ニューヨークタイムズのピーター・ベイカー記者は次のようにツイートした。

「アメリカがアサド大統領を退陣させるために国際的な連携役を担うかどうか」と質問されたティラーソン国務長官は、「そのプロセスを進めている」と答えた。

また、ティラーソン国務長官はシリアの同盟国ロシアに対し、アサド大統領に対するスタンスを再考するよう促した。

「ロシア政府がアサド政権への今後の支援の継続を慎重に検討することは極めて重要だ」

ティラーソン氏の一連の発言は、3月30日にトルコを訪問した時の声明とは対照的だ。国務長官は、アサド大統領の退陣は優先事項ではないとし、「アサド大統領の長期的な地位は、シリア国民が決めるだろう」と述べた。
