少年サッカーチームの13人全員が、7月10日までにタイ北部のタムルアン洞窟から救出された。世界中の人々が見守る中、タイ海軍の特殊部隊員や国外のダイバーらが計90人体制で進めた快挙だったが、意外な事実が分かった。

救出された13人のうち、コーチの男性と少年3人の計4人がタイ国籍を持っていなかったのだ。このサッカーチーム「ムーパ・アカデミー」の創設者であるノパラット・カンタウォンさんがAFP通信に明かした。

ノパラットさんは「少年たちにとって最大の希望は、国籍を取得することだ。彼らはチェンライ県外に遠征するのにも苦労していた」と説明した。身分証明ができないことで、移動が制限されるためだという。

■「彼らはプロのサッカー選手になれない」

アムネスティ日本によると、タイの山岳民族は全人口の約1.5%(約93万人)を占めており、彼らは200年以上前から中国から南下し、タイ北部にたどりついたと見られている。

1974年、タイ政府は山岳民族に国籍を与えることを決議したが、現在も4分の1が無国籍と言われている。国籍取得の条件が満たせないことや、満たしていても、政府の認定作業が遅れていることなどが原因だ。

前出のノパラットさんは「少年達は身分証明できないため、プロのサッカー選手になることもできない」とした上で、彼らにタイ国籍を付与する動きが始まったことも明かした。

世界的な注目を浴びた今回の救出劇。国籍問題でも少年たちに朗報が届くことを祈りたい。
