タイ北部の洞窟に閉じ込められていたサッカー少年ら全員が救出された。最後の少年が助け出された7月10日、世界中から喜びの声が上がったが、サッカー・ワールドカップに出場しているイングランド代表のカイル・ウォーカー選手(28)は、少年らにユニフォームをプレゼントしたいとの意向を示した。

閉じ込められていたのは、同じサッカーチームのメンバーで、11~17歳の少年12人とコーチの男性(25)。少年らは6月23日、タイ北部チェンライ郊外にあるタムルアン洞窟に入ったが、その後の大雨によって洞窟内に水が侵入。入口から約4キロ奥で足止めを食らう事態になっていた。

少年らを救出するため、タイ海軍の特殊部隊と海外から駆けつけたダイバーら約90人が救出活動にあたった。7月8、9日にそれぞれ4人ずつ少年を救出、10日には残った5人を助け出した。

現場はこの時期、雨季にあたり、大雨によって洞窟内の水位が高まる恐れがあった。また、脱出経路に空気ボンベを設置していた元特殊部隊員が戻る途中、酸欠になって死亡するなど、救助の難しさが指摘されていた。

それだけに、少年らが全員救出されたことが明らかになると、世界中から喜びと救助チームに対する賞賛の声が上がった。

サッカー・ワールドカップに出場し、ベスト4に残っているイングランド代表のウォーカー選手はTwitterでこう述べた。

「タイの子どもたちが無事洞窟の外に出られたという素晴らしいニュース!ユニフォームを彼らにプレゼントしたい!だれか送り先の住所知らない?」

また、イングランド・プレミアリーグのマンチェスターユナイテッドもTwitterで少年らを次のシーズンの試合に招待する意向を示した。

一方、FIFA(国際サッカー連盟)は当初、少年たちの救出が間に合えば、7月15日にモスクワで予定されているワールドカップの決勝戦に彼らを招待する方針を指名していたが、それを撤回。BBCによると、FIFA関係者は「優先すべきは関係者の健康状態だ」と話したという。
